Signature
The somewhat confusing term signature refers to a group of pages folded together to form a section of a book. Most books consist of multiple signatures bound together. While there are various ways to print signatures at home, here’s the method I use:
-
Printer Setup: In Brother Printer software, select the “2-sided/Booklet” option.
-
Settings: Click on “2-sided Settings(x)...” and choose Left Binding if your book reads left to right.
-
Booklet Printing Method: This section lets you define how many pages go into each signature. For standard printing paper, a range of 5–8 pages per signature is typical. Folding too many pages will bow the center pages outward...while having too few pages means having a lot more signatures to stitch.
-
Codex
The OG binge‑read format — the moment humanity realised you could just turn the page instead of doing a full‑body scroll workout.
The bound‑page format that replaced scrolls in the early centuries CE — stacks of leaves sewn along one edge, often between covers, allowing two‑sided writing and easy navigation. Ancestor of modern book formats.
